Major League Soccer Explores NFT

The United States-based soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS), has dipped its feet into the non-fungible realm through its latest initiative, MLS QUEST. Developed in collaboration with the Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) and the pro-sport digital collectible platform Sweet, MLS aims to blur the boundaries between fans and their favorite soccer players.

Utilizing the energy-efficient and fast layer-1 Sui blockchain, MLS aims to establish MLS QUEST as a platform enabling fans to collect video-themed digital collectibles (memorabilia) from key moments of football matches featuring teams and players. Owning these virtual collectibles unlocks exclusive rewards and immersive VIP experiences within the league.

Fans can start their first quest at no cost by obtaining a medallion at the MLS QUEST webpage, where they can instantly unlock a key play highlight from their favorite team. In-person, fans can collect medallions by watching MLS games at home or attending live matches. Fans can collect medallions online by following MLS and MLSPA on social platforms or purchasing them from the marketplace.

Fans can complete a quest and unlock a reward by collecting all four medallions from a match. These include team merchandise, autographed jerseys, tickets to MLS matches, digital collectibles, and exclusive on-field experiences.

Highlighting how the latest initiative aims to bring the most utility to fans, MLSPA’s COO, Dan Jones, said:

“Players are the core of every fan experience, and MLS QUEST brings them into an exciting digital space where fans can interact with them in new ways. Featuring licensed player names and images, this platform offers a unique way to celebrate key moments with their favorite players. Partnering with Sweet allows us to expand how fans and players connect, and we’re excited to watch it elevate the fan experience.”

All 29 football clubs under MLS are in line to benefit from the latest non-fungible initiative. Many other football clubs have explored the NFT realm. Two months ago, the Italian football club, SSC Napoli, partnered with The Sandbox to enter the metaverse. Earlier this year, the Romanian Football Federation joined the non-fungible verse to provide more utility to fans.

MLS’ foray into the non-fungible market could pave the way for more football lovers to explore the ever-growing NFT realm. Time will tell how this projection plays out.
